Wild Duck Creek Estate

Wild Duck Creek Estate

A small family-run winery situated 8km west of Heathcote, alongside the Wild Duck Creek.

David (aka ‘Duck’) and Diana planted the first vines in 1974 and in 1979 named the first vineyard Alan’s Cabernet Vineyard, after Duck’s late father Alan. The Original Vineyard was planted in 1988 on land owned by Diana’s parents. Duck and Diana have three children – Liam, Ngaire and Bridie.

Traditional winemaking methods including hand-picking, open fermentation, hand-plunging, basket-pressing, and long-term barrel-ageing are fostered, as is the use biodynamic principles on their own vineyards.

Second-generation winemaking has flourished for more than a decade through Liam, whose methodical yet innovative approaches merge fantastically with Duck’s eccentricity – a humorous and brilliant concoction!

Their passion is to produce extraordinary wines of balance and power that enrich and delight the senses.

Wild Duck Creek Estate-Duck Muck-Shiraz-2002-750mL

Wild Duck Creek Estate is one of those cult wineries in Australia, based outside of Melbourne, that has achieved much of its acclaim due to a mixture of excellent winemaking techniques (vinification is entirely effected through manual pressing) and the winemaker David Anderson "Duck" with a keen sense of what good wine is. In 1994 due to a more than abundant crop, Duck filled the winery with grapes, fermenting in anything that didn’t leak! This meant leaving part of one row of Shiraz unpicked in the Original Vineyard. As luck would have it, Duck forgot that these grapes existed until a good friend and fellow Shiraz-lover, David McKee, discovered them three weeks after vintage. The grapes were still in remarkably good condition, albeit a little over-ripe. David McKee insisted that these wines be made separately. He bought a new barrel, and like Duck; gave most of his share away. Only later it was discovered to be quite an extraordinary wine! Duck Muck is a wine of power, concentration, structure and balance.

Wild Duck Creek Estate-Original Vineyard-Shiraz-2001-1.5L

The Original Shiraz Vineyard is situated next to the Winery itself, some 7kms south-west of the Heathcote township. Planted in 1988 on Buckshot Quarts and Clay Shale, this vineyard is only small in size (5 acres), but is primarily responsible for some of the most intense flavours one is ever likely to put in ones mouth. The fruit from this yard was the fruit used exclusively for the original Springflat Shiraz wines (1991-1996), and has been the base wine for both the Shiraz Reserve and Duck Muck. This vineyard is unique. Only available in magnums.
