Wild Duck Creek Estate-Duck Muck-Shiraz-2002-750mL

Wild Duck Creek Estate is one of those cult wineries in Australia, based outside of Melbourne, that has achieved much of its acclaim due to a mixture of excellent winemaking techniques (vinification is entirely effected through manual pressing) and the winemaker David Anderson "Duck" with a keen sense of what good wine is. In 1994 due to a more than abundant crop, Duck filled the winery with grapes, fermenting in anything that didn’t leak! This meant leaving part of one row of Shiraz unpicked in the Original Vineyard. As luck would have it, Duck forgot that these grapes existed until a good friend and fellow Shiraz-lover, David McKee, discovered them three weeks after vintage. The grapes were still in remarkably good condition, albeit a little over-ripe. David McKee insisted that these wines be made separately. He bought a new barrel, and like Duck; gave most of his share away. Only later it was discovered to be quite an extraordinary wine! Duck Muck is a wine of power, concentration, structure and balance.

95/100
The Wine Advocate
The renowned 2002 Shiraz Duck Muck, a late harvest cuvee with 16.5% alcohol, does not possess the Amarone-like, raisiny, pruny character one might expect from a Shiraz of this power. It boasts a dense purple color, a sumptuous perfume of black fruits, white flowers, and toasty oak, tremendous balance, full body, immense concentration, and abundant glycerin. Give it 3-4 more years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 10-15. Sadly, there are only 200 cases, which I suppose explains the bold pricing.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #155

92/100
Wine Spectator
Dark flavors of cherry have an edge of sharp acidity and alcohol. A strong peppermint and licorice component adds to the blackberry and tar that lingers impressively on the finish. There's a lot going on here, but it's not going to appeal to everyone.

d'Arenberg-The Dead Arm-Shiraz-2001-750mL

Upon release, ‘The Dead Arm’ Shiraz has a vivid, young, dense, purple-red colour. Very intense aromas with a complex combination of fragrant spices and violets, dark cherry, blackberry and blueberry, are made more complex with great liquorice, pepper and integrated svelte of boot-polish like characters. The taste is rich, gutsy and virile, with attacking spice, dark liquorice, cherry, blackberry, plum and dried black olive. The level of fruit weight masks the framework of oak tannins; however, the mineral fruit grittiness is balanced with a very long fruit-fragrant, persistent spice will yield a wine of great ageing power.
