The Factor is assembled from separately vinified parcels of un-irrigated Shiraz grapes grown in several sub-regions viz. Marananga, Greenock, Krondorf, Gomersal, Kalimna & Ebenezer. Following vinification these wines are matured in both new and old French barriques before they are blended and bottled without either fining or filtration.

Aromas of blackberry, pipe tobacco smoke, black currants and roasted coffee beans with a palate suggestive of olive tapenade and minerals as well as the trade mark saddle-leather so typical of high quality Rhone red wines made from this grape variety.

Complex and concentrated, the wine is cloaked in velvet tannins that will continue to develop for another 10 years at least. The Factor is all that you would expect of a pureblood Barossa Shiraz.

The Wine Advocate
The 100% Shiraz offering, the exquisite 2001 The Factor, aged 24 months in French oak (30% new), possesses a roasted, Cote Rotie character than its Shiraz siblings. Blackberry, blueberry, espresso roast, smoke, and a roasted component are found in this intense, rich effort along with considerable structure, fabulous density, and a broad, deep, profound palate.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #155

97/100
Wine Spectator
A big wine with an extraordinary sense of elegance, positively glowing with gorgeous blueberry, plum and white pepper flavors that skim across the palate like a sailboat in a perfect wind. Hints of mineral and spice weave through the long, long finish. Classic stuff.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Sep 15 2004

Bev Portal

2001 is an exceptional vintage for Barossa Shiraz. The Factor was tasted from a Magnum bottle (1.5L) and decanted for three hours.

Concentrated Shiraz with expressive aromas of black fruits, black olive-tapenade and leather. ‘’Powerful’’ describes this wine but it is well balanced with integrated Tannins and a fantastic finesse.

Tasted 25 Nov 2015

BP, Clio Giudici

Wine Companion
Dense red-purple; vanilla and cedar surround a rich core of black fruits; excellent extract and length; good oak.

Torbreck-The Steading-Grenache Shiraz Mataro-2003-750mL

Since Torbreck’s first release The Steading has been a favourite wine because of the old magnificent vines that produce its core.

The melding of the three traditional Barossa varieties creates a tremendously complex a nd rewarding wine. The Grenache and Mataro are from old bush vines that are pruned in the traditional ‘goblet’ style to a limited number of buds, reducing yields and promoting flavour and colour concentration. Only the free run component of the Shiraz is used in the blend to allow the Grenache identity to shine through.

'On a highland farm the collection of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a steading. The varieties Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz all stand in their own right. However, in blending, their strengths create a complex wine of solid earthy structure.'

Vinification: Single vineyard components are fermented and were then matured in seasoned French and American oak barrels for 22 months. These parcels are later blended prior to bottling.

Torbreck-The Struie-Shiraz-2004-750mL

When poured, the density and depth of the 2004 Struie is immediately apparent; completely black/purple with an opulent magenta tinge. A floral hit of violets makes way for the more brooding aromas of tar, chocolate, licorice and coffee with a subtle hint of cinnamon and spice.

The rich, luscious palate of great concentration envelopes the mouth and silky smooth tannins compliment and complete this elegant blend.

Food Matching:

Barbecue, ribs, spicy sausages and smoked brisket.
