Chester Osborn, the remarkable person behind this enormous array of both impeccably high quality and value-priced wines, deserves considerable accolades for what he is able to achieve at all price ranges.

In short, the accolades that proprietor/winemaker Chester Osborn receives not only from The Wine Advocate, but virtually everybody in the wine world, are all well deserved.

The 2002 season was characterised by a cold, wet winter and spring, which produced lower yields with good, thick-skinned berries. The cool and dry summer ripened fruit gradually and a warm, dry autumn allowed the grapes to ripen fully, producing some of the best and most exotic characters seen for many years.
This wine is dark ruby red in colour, juicy and aromatic on the nose with hints of leafy and tobacco varietal characters. The palate is instantly rich and mouth filling with ripe cherry and blackcurrant fruit. Well structured with mocha and chocolate flavours and fine emery tannins. White pepper and cloves combine to give a lengthy, spicy finish.
The wine exhibits a deep, dense plum red colour. The intoxicating aromatics are evident as soon as the cork is pulled.
There is a concentrated array of wild blackberries and fruits of the forest, intermingled with freshly ground cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is equally as rich with juicy, sweet fruit, evolving into a silky, creamy mid palate.

This wine is deep maroon with perfumed aromas of dark chocolate and blackberry. There are also some hints of coffee and golden syrup. The palate is an intense explosion of sweet, luscious fruit and toasty oak, even so the texture is silky smooth and creamy and seems to glide over the tongue. Well balanced, the wine finishes with cinnamon and licorice that linger for some time.
This is McLarenVale Shiraz at its best. The concentration of fruit with its silky texture is amazing. The nose is powerful with lifted aromas of intense pepper, blackcurrant and spice. The palate has a firm structure with chocolate, licorice and spice fruit characters. The wine has an incredible depth of fruit, which is layered and complex and will linger in your mouth for minutes.
Owners Paul and Lynn Shirvington have replaced winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis with Kim Johnston, who appears to be following in the same footsteps, producing bigger than life, bold, rich, but beautifully linear and precise wines. Both of these cuvees are barrel-fermented and aged in 75-85% new oak, primarily American. The vines are young, which makes the quality even more remarkable.
