Grange is both Penfolds' and arguably Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia.

Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world's great wines.

The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds' multivineyard, multi-district blending philosophy. The first 100% shiraz Grange since 1963, and an excellent follow on to the 1998 vintage.

95/100
Wine Companion
Concentrated blackberry and licorice fruit, the oak perfectly integrated. A powerful, masculine style, a touch more austere than the '98.
, James Halliday Issue: Jul 2003

94/100
Wine Spectator
Not quite as broad and generous as riper vintages, but tremendously classy, offering smoky, earthy blackberry, plum and currant fruit that compete effectively against cedary oak on the long finish. The flavors gain with each sip, fanning out impressively. It's tight now, but it could age beautifully.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Sep 30 2004

92/100
The Wine Advocate
The 1999 Grange does not come close to such great Granges as the 1998, 1996, 1991, and 1990. Dense ruby/purple to the edge, with a bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, and floral-like aromas, and medium to full body, the 1999 has an acid punch, but also tremendous layers of fruit and extract. Not massive, but elegant and nicely layered, it requires another 2-3 years of cellaring, and should last for 12-15 years.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #155

91/100
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of raspberry, cola, root beer and coconut. Thick, dense and concentrated, with exotic, slightly candied dark fruit, caramel, toasted coconut and mineral flavors nicely shaped by firm acids. Shows strong fruit and a major dose of oak on the powerful, backward finish. This can't quite match the 1998 for sheer depth of fruit, but it's built to age.
ST, Stephen Tanzer Issue: Aug 1 2004

17.5/20
Jancis Robinson
Lively, fresh, racy – one of the leaner, more austere, more claret-like examples. Exceptionally dry finish – really tough in fact at the moment.
JR, Jancis Robinson Issue: Jun 2009

86/100
Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine
Deep, inky red with fresh acidity and a long dry finish. Strong black cherry and cassis flavours with plenty of spicy oak.
, Bob Campbell Issue: Mar 2005

Penfolds-Grange-Shiraz-2000-750mL

A mouthfilling, generous and expansive palate, as expected of this marque. Dark chocolate and plum fruits court a deceptive play of substantial ripe tannins and, at this relatively early stage, provide for a more powerful Grange stamp on the palate than on the nose.

Oak plays a supportive role and is perfectly integrated and absorbed. This is a wine of admirable balance and poise, with trademark mid-palate richness.

Two Hands-Deer in Headlights-Shiraz-2003-750mL

2003 vintage:

Winter started with heavy rains, which tapered off resulting in below average rainfalls and a successful budburst in early spring. Flowering and set occurred in November, promoting uniform berry development and bunch numbers were on average for the season. Veraison for Shiraz and Cabernet started in late January with the older vines producing lighter crops. The height of summer saw 65mm of rainfall in the last week of February requiring swift viticultural practices to prevent the onset of disease and fungus. Our 2003 Barossa Shiraz displayed great colour and depth of flavour. Yields overall were below the long-term average but the grapes were of good quality and the resultant wines display terrific potential.

Wine description:

Bright purple plum colour. Glossy red fruits and spiced plum cake on the nose with a hint of vanilla spice. The palate shows swathes of rich generous fruit, ripe blackberry intermingled with soft cedary spice. A fine coating of gentle tannins washes over the palate with a long and persistent finish to end.
