Professional Reviews

92/100
The Wine Advocate
One of Australia's most traditional winemakers, Colin Kay fashions old style, high quality, distinctive Australian reds. Tarry, chewy, and fleshy, the 2003 Shiraz Hillside has a bit more punch (15% alcohol) as well as a sappy character that is not present in the regular bottling. It is a broad, savory, expansively flavored, full-bodied Shiraz.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #161

92/100
Wine Companion
Good colour; soft, round and rich; gentle plum, mocha and vanilla; everything moulded by 2 years in oak. Shares the ultimate retro-style label with Block 6.
, James Halliday Issue: Jan 2006

90/100
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Ruby red. Exotic aromas of blackberry, smoked meat, vanilla, mocha and candied licorice. Fat and velvety in texture, with impressively sweet dark berry and plum flavors retaining energy and precision through the finish. Tannins are fine-grained. As in most recent vintages, an intriguing, sexy wine.
ST, Josh Raynolds Issue: Aug 1 2006

85/100
Wine Spectator
Bright and chewy, with an earthy edge to the blackberry and white pepper flavors.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Oct 15 2006

d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2003 750mL

The 2003 season was characterised by a very low winter rainfall which signalled the vine to minimize potential crop load. The ripening period was warm producing a crop load of small berries and very pure, ripe fruit characters. Even with a smaller than normal crop load many batches showed wonderful fruit characters due to an excellent skin to pulp ratios and this is evident in the final wine. This year in particular selected parcels of fruit deemed worthy of the Dead Arm label were down 50% in volume.
