Kaesler-Old Bastard-Shiraz-2004-6L

Producer: Kaesler
SKU: 805
Delivery date: Dispatch within 1-3 day's
These old Shiraz vines coped with the heat of the 2004 vintage (3 days over 47 degrees) and seemed to revel in hot weather. Also, the deep roots of the old vines mean they keep cooler during these hot spells. This Old Bastard has all the things that you would expect; great colour, firm rich tannin and a tight fruity nose. It seems that ageing is a pre-requisite for expensive Barossa Shiraz and this 2004 Old Bastard shouldn’t disappoint.

95/100
Wine Spectator
Big but graceful. Offers a plush mouthful of ripe cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and cardamom, mingling beautifully on the rich, expressive finish. The tannins are beautifully integrated and refined, but definitely worth cellaring to soften.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Oct 15 2007

95/100
The Wine Advocate
Kaesler's icon cuvee is their Shiraz Old Bastard, produced from a single vineyard planted in 1896, and aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. The 2004 is a big yet remarkably elegant, deep purple-colored Shiraz offering notes of blueberries, black raspberries, and toasty oak, a superb texture, admirable richness, and a long, heady finish. There is plenty of tannin lurking beneath the cascade of fruit, glycerin, and extract. While accessible, it is too young to drink at present, and is meant to keep for 2-3 decades.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #167

95/100
Wine Companion
Great colour, deep and clear; extreme concentration, focus and power; a super-charged V8 engine idling and waiting to go, with all the fruit one could wish for.
, James Halliday Issue: Apr 2006

93/100
Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine
Impressively dense and fairly complex wine with masses of sweet choc/mocha, liquorice and tar flavours. Plenty of oak but in balance. VEry impressive.
, Bob Campbell Issue: Jul 2006
