Purple and maroon with a dense, youthful edge. Blackberry, raspberry, plum, blueberry, with lifted mocha and spice complexity. Secondary aromas of vanilla, coffee and charred oak offer added complexity. Due to the season the palate is fine and textured. Tight tannins grip well but are nicely balanced with glycerol sweetness from the old vines. Finish is firm with excellent persistence in flavour.

Professional Reviews

96/100
The Wine Advocate
The flagship offering, the 2002 Shiraz Old Bastard was fashioned from a vineyard planted in 1896, and was cropped at one ton of fruit per acre. It spent 22 months in French oak before being bottled with neither fining nor filtration. A spectacular perfume of raspberries, plums, blackberries, espresso, vanilla, and charcoal is followed by a tannic Shiraz with a huge palate, massive concentration, tremendous richness, and a multidimensional flavor profile. Less alcoholic (15.2%) than The Bogan. While the 2002 is a brilliant effort, it is not quite as massive as the 2001 ... but that's splitting hairs.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #155

95/100
Wine Companion
Gloriously concentrated and intense essence of Shiraz; seamless black fruits and tannins; immaculate oak handling.
, James Halliday Issue: Dec 2004

94/100
Wine Spectator
A skyscraper of a wine. Dense, powerful and rangy, with raw-edged cherry, blackberry and cedary spice flavors competing for attention, persisting impressively on the long, vivid finish. Give it time to integrate its tannins.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Mar 31 2005
