d'Arenberg-The Dead Arm-Shiraz-2003-1.5L

Producer: d'Arenberg
SKU: 109
Delivery date: Dispatch within 1-3 day's

The 2003 season was characterised by a very low winter rainfall which signalled the vine to minimize potential crop load. The ripening period was warm producing a crop load of small berries and very pure, ripe fruit characters.

Even with a smaller than normal crop load many batches showed wonderful fruit characters due to an excellent skin to pulp ratios and this is evident in the final wine. This year in particular selected parcels of fruit deemed worthy of the Dead Arm label were down 50% in volume.

95/100
The Wine Advocate
One of this estate's flagship wines, the 2003 The Dead Arm Shiraz appears to be better than the 2002. A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple color, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is a classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #161

93/100
Wine Companion
Deep colour; typically massively rich and concentrated; black fruits, chocolate, tannins and oak are all fighting each other for top spot. Hopefully, a truce will be declared in 5 or so years.
, James Halliday Issue: Oct 2005

88/100
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Bright medium ruby. Ripe plum and mulberry aromas are a bit sullen, requiring aeration to reveal complicating notes of espresso, licorice and tar. Rich and thick, with roasted cherry and dark chocolate flavors; lacks a sense of energy. Dense, ripe and weighty on the finish but seems reluctant to give up much in the way of nuance today.
ST, Josh Raynolds Issue: Aug 1 2005

86/100
Wine Spectator
Firm, with a tannic feel to the green olive and berry flavors. This wine has been veering toward a green, earthy flavor profile in recent years, making it less immediately accessible than earlier vintages.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Sep 30 2005

d'Arenberg-The Coppermine Road-Cabernet Sauvignon-2002-750mL

The nose shows intense blackcurrant and cranberry fruit, and the subtle cedary cinnamon spice, barrel-ferment and oak derived aromas, violet and mint scents, as well as liquorice and chocolate smells. Interwined is this wounderful green edge that lifts the wine into a cool climate sepctrum which typifies the cold year. These aromas combine with some cassis, blueberry, and cranberry, with lingering mocha and plumy fruit and are just showing through amongst a long, intense vibrant, gritty fruit tannin finish.

Deep purple colour. This wine possesses a complex bouquet of red berries, cedar, mint, tobacco, espresso and chocolate. Appears bright cherry red with a darker plum coloured core. The nose shows licorice and dark fruits, toasty oak with a chocolatey rum & raisin aroma. The entry to the palate is soft with a rich solid palate that is typically McLaren Vale, with blackcurrant and stewed plum flavours. The structure is typical of Fox Creek showing ripe fruit tannin with integrated oak complexity.
