96/100
The Wine Advocate
Primarily Shiraz with a tiny dollop of Viognier, the blockbuster 2003 Descendant spent 18 months in used French oak (barrels that were previously used for Torbreck's flagship cuvee, Run Rig). A spectacular perfume of flowers, blackberries, cassis, licorice, and honeysuckle is followed by an unctuously textured, full-bodied red displaying a seamless integration of wood, tannin, acidity, and alcohol. With elegance, power, richness, and just about everything one could want in a full-throttle, beautifully balanced dry red wine, it will drink well for 12-15 years.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #161

96/100
Wine Companion
Deep colour; full-bodied; very complex, high-toned spicy aromas with the apricot influence of Viognier obvious, but not overdone; excellent texture and structure.
, James Halliday Issue: Mar 2005

94/100
Wine Spectator
Finely honed, focused and brilliant in flavor, with that distinct twang of fruity spice from Viognier adding a welcome lift to the dark berry, sloe plum and dried apricot flavors that linger expressively on the long finish.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Jun 15 2005

16.5/20
Jancis Robinson
For the moment this is very disjointed with its extremely sweet start and extremely tough finish. It may get there eventually…?
JR, Jancis Robinson Issue: Oct 2005

Torbreck-The Factor-Shiraz-2001-750mL

The Factor is assembled from separately vinified parcels of un-irrigated Shiraz grapes grown in several sub-regions viz. Marananga, Greenock, Krondorf, Gomersal, Kalimna & Ebenezer. Following vinification these wines are matured in both new and old French barriques before they are blended and bottled without either fining or filtration.

Aromas of blackberry, pipe tobacco smoke, black currants and roasted coffee beans with a palate suggestive of olive tapenade and minerals as well as the trade mark saddle-leather so typical of high quality Rhone red wines made from this grape variety.

Complex and concentrated, the wine is cloaked in velvet tannins that will continue to develop for another 10 years at least. The Factor is all that you would expect of a pureblood Barossa Shiraz.
