Wine Companion
A brooding monster of a wine! Incredibly concentrated, powerful and intense, with fruitcake spice enveloping a massive core of fruit; the palate is almost syrupy, and so rich that a great deal of time will be needed to see this wine come around; if in fact it ever does.
, James Halliday Issue: Mar 2008

The 2004 Shiraz was sourced from 96-year-old vines in Vine Vale with tiny yields of 0.65 tons per acre. It was left on its lees for 36 months in seasoned French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Opaque purple-colored, it has a brooding bouquet of cedar, pencil lead, blueberry, and licorice. This leads to a muscular, structured, tightly wound wine that appears to have the right stuff but remains compact at the moment. It may need up to a decade to fully express itself and should last through 2035.

Fox Creek-Fox & Hounds-Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon-2002-3L

A special McLaren Vale Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the excellent 2002 vintage. Originally made for a private client from Fox Creek's own grapes, it was for sale to private customers and not available for normal retail sale. The blend in this wine is 60% Shiraz and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Shiraz was fermented on skins for 8 days and about 10% of the wine saw barrel fermentation during the later stages of the fermentation. The Cabernet Sauvignon components were fermented to dryness, before being transferred to oak. Maturation was in approximately 20% French and 80% American oak, with about 30% of this being new oak.

Fox Creek-Reserve-Shiraz-2002-1.5L

Very deep red/back with crimson edges. The nose offers multiple levels of complexity with sweet blackberry, chocolate, licorice and vanilla evident complemented by savoury well-balanced oak. Very rich powerful entry of blackberry with savoury spice, licorice and dark chocolate filling out the mid palate, leading to a long finish balanced by well integrated tannin structure of great depth.

Kay Brothers Amery-Block Six-Shiraz-2003-750mL

Multi layered concentration of very rich, juicy, full-bodied black-berried fruits combined with chocolate, tar, pepper, liquorice, smoky oak and chewy robust tannins.

An intensely complex mouthful of Shiraz fruit with a finish that lingers and lingers. The rich fruit carries the 15.5% alc/vol and we would see this Block 6 developing into a great example of old vine Shiraz with 6 years plus in a good cellar.
