Deep inky purple to black in color, the bouquet is layered and intense with notes of chocolate, rose petals, clay, scorched earth, minerals, lavender, wood oven smoke, tar and toffee.

The palate starts out deep and plush with formidable weight, then hits you with an explosion of plumy dark fruits that roll on to very long soft fruity tannins; this all hangs together quite effortlessly.

Professional Reviews

93/100
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Medium red color. Floral, mineral-tinged red berry aromas, with subtle spice and underbrush notes; this could pass for a ripe Burgundy. Fine-grained and spicy, showing vivid raspberry and strawberry preserve flavors that build impressively with air. Finishes with silky tannins and energetic notes of red berries and fresh rose. This is awfully suave.

92/100
Wine Companion
Some development; very fragrant and spicy; light- to medium-bodied, but a strong expression of the region and variety; an almost lemony tang to the fruit.
, James Halliday Issue: Jul 2006

90/100
The Wine Advocate
The 2004 Aerope Grenache (90% Grenache and 10% Shiraz) is fashioned from the firm's finest barrels. Although it boasts beautiful kirsch liqueur notes along with stunning elegance and richness, the day I tasted it, it was more closed and less expressive than some of its less expensive siblings. It didn't even evolve as it sat in the glass, so I'm sure I saw it at a more diminished state.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #167

88/100
Wine Spectator
Fresh and open, with cherry and rhubarb aromas and flavors that linger nicely on the soft finish. Grenache.
