98/100
The Wine Advocate
The 2003 Les Amis is a 300-case cuvee of 100% Grenache from a vineyard planted in 1901. I have had a lot of fun serving the 2002 blind to guests, and for my taste, this cuvee is the reference point for old vine Grenache produced in Australia. It is extraordinarily elegant for a wine of such power, richness, and intensity. Amazingly delineated, with a dense ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeously sweet nose of smoke, spice box, black cherry liqueur, creme de cassis, licorice, and lavender, it offers impressive balance, purity, opulence, and persistence. This phenomenal wine is both powerful and refreshingly elegant. A magnificent achievement for Torbreck, it should drink well for 15+ years.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Dense ruby. Exotic, utterly captivating aromas of blackberry and black cherry liqueur, raspberry jam, star anise, smoked meat and fresh flowers. Lush red and dark berry flavors are perked up by Asian and Moroccan spice notes, with subtle acidity giving added lift and solid, polished tannins providing a firm structural underpinning. The very long finish features fresh dark fruit tones that don't let up.

Torbreck-The Steading-Grenache Shiraz Mataro-2003-750mL

Since Torbreck’s first release The Steading has been a favourite wine because of the old magnificent vines that produce its core.

The melding of the three traditional Barossa varieties creates a tremendously complex a nd rewarding wine. The Grenache and Mataro are from old bush vines that are pruned in the traditional ‘goblet’ style to a limited number of buds, reducing yields and promoting flavour and colour concentration. Only the free run component of the Shiraz is used in the blend to allow the Grenache identity to shine through.

'On a highland farm the collection of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a steading. The varieties Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz all stand in their own right. However, in blending, their strengths create a complex wine of solid earthy structure.'

Vinification: Single vineyard components are fermented and were then matured in seasoned French and American oak barrels for 22 months. These parcels are later blended prior to bottling.

d'Arenberg-The Dead Arm-Shiraz-2002-750mL

The 2002 season was characterised by a cold, wet winter and spring, which produced lower yields with good, thick-skinned berries. The cool and dry summer ripened fruit gradually and a warm, dry autumn allowed the grapes to ripen fully, producing some of the best and most exotic characters seen for many years.

Torbreck-The Struie-Shiraz-2002-750mL

Named after a hill that rises above the Glenmorangie distillery, The Struie is the home of a pub called the Altman Arms.

The Struie sources fruit from the high altitudes of Eden Valley imparting delicate spice, white pepper and fruit characters. While the Barossa component displays a richer, deeper, more brooding flavour and intensity. The combined structure will reward extended cellaring.

The view from the Struie down across the Dornoch Firth is as inspiring as that of the Valley floor from the Barossa Ranges. This wine is a blend of Shiraz from the Eden and Barossa Valleys, combining the best of both regions.
