Bev Portal

Virgin Hills is a single vineyard planted in1968 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Malbec and Merlot.

18 years after, Virgin Hills 1998 still has lots to offer, it is a very surprising wine.

Intense nose of mint, tea tree, cedar aromas and dried fruits.

The palate is well developed and shows flavours of menthol and tobacco. The wine is also savoury with hint of leather and game.

Wine Companion
Virgin Hills' ability to produce consistently fine wine for over a decade has earned it an icon status. Medium red-purple, the hue reassuringly bright; the clean and smooth bouquet shows a pleasantly ripe and complex mix of berry fruits. The elegant, bright and lively palate has a slight minty backdrop to the predominant red berries, finishing with fine tannins and subtle oak. I am an unabashed Virgin Hills supporter.

The Washington Post
Virgin Hills produces a single Cabernet-based red wine from an extraordinary 30-acre vineyard in Victoria, Australia. Like many of the world's great terroirs, whether in Burgundy, the Piedmont or Germany, this vineyard is at the marginal limit for ripening. In warmer years, when ripeness is achieved, Virgin Hills makes a wine that ranks with the greatest red of Australia, including the legendary Grange, which sells for five times as much. Yet, while Grange is massively concentrated and strong, Virgin Hills is more like a Grand Cru Bordeaux, elegantly structured with deep blackcurrant fruit, possessing marvelous focus and balance. While 1998 is not a truly great vintage, the '98 Virgin Hills is nevertheless a fascinating wine, a bit lean, but with gorgeously defined fruit and a first-rate cassis and fresh herb bouquet. Under new owner, Michael Hope, the future looks even brighter.

The Washington Post
After more than 20 years of covering the wine beat, it takes a lot to get me gaga over a wine. It has to be either a tremendous bargain that I'm dying to share with you or a wine of such superb quality that just sipping it makes my nervous system tingle. I'm gaga over Virgin Hills. This relatively obscure Australian gem may be the greatest red wine you've never heard of. Until recently, I had tasted it only once. I wrote a short blurb about it a couple of years ago, but there was little available for the United States. I'm delighted to report that decent quantities are finally here and you should move on it before it disappears.

Virgin Hills has long held a special place in the hearts of many wine lovers, especially the breed that like to seek out obscure and hard to get.

Torbreck-Cuvee Juveniles-Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre-2002-750mL

The Juveniles is a bold and seductive unoaked blend that represents a youthful wine made from old vines. Fruit from dry grown, low yielding vines is fermented, bottled and released early not dissimilar to a Nuevo style wine.

It is fragrant, intense and concentrated in flavour with blackberry, earth and Asian spices. Sensuous palate feel and tremendous length make this wine frighteningly drinkable now, yet with a constitution to mature in the cellar for many years.
