Glaetzer

Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he's passionate about - limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. It is the pinnacle of Colin's 30-year career with achievements such as his creation of the revered Barossa Valley Estates E & E Black Pepper Shiraz. The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley and the current generation is firmly entrenched in the family wine business. Colin and his winemaker son Ben have a shared philosophy. Both firmly believe that great wines are made in the vineyard. Their belief in 'terroir' and an understanding of the ancient dry-grown vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer district of the Barossa is evident. Exceptional fruit from a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers is the backbone of Glaetzer wines. With minimal intervention, Colin and Ben make the unique, elegant wines which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossa Valley.

The name Godolphin has been linked with excellence in many fields, including politics, education and literature. We are using the same ideals to make this wine.

The label echoes the Ancient Egyptian Ankh symbol (pronunciation: onk). Historically the ankh symbolised sunrise, regeneration, regrowth and renewal. Glaetzer Godolphin made quite an impact in its first 2 vintages - 2004 & 2005. From the 2006 vintage onwards, the wine has been known as Anaperenna, making first two vintages of the wine a collectable addition to any wine cellar.

Godolphin 2004 was declared the "Great Australian Red" in a national competition to find the best shiraz/cabernet sauvignon blend in Australia.

 

Vintage 2004: A mild January was excellent for optimal colour production and flavour development. After heatwave conditions, harvest began earlier than predicted, with the earliest Shiraz being picked in late February. Despite this, quality expectations were high and the Barossa experienced an Indian summer with no huge rainfall events and temperatures ranging between 25 and 30 degrees. The resultant Shiraz has good colour with elegant flavours.

 

Description: The wine is a seamless fusion of two varieties, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. A vibrant plummy red in colour. On the nose, there are lifted blackcurrant and briary fruit, expressive of Cabernet Sauvignon, with pure cinnamon and chocolate spice. The Cabernet components remained on skins for 2-3 months and developed a savoury complexity which tightens the shiraz. The palate has leafy, herbaceous notes and rich dark fruit flavours. Well-rounded and velvety, the tannins are ripe and focussed.
